PASCAGOULA -- A former Moss Point police detective testified Wednesday that a witness fingered Nathaniel Coleman as the man who shot and killed Nalder Worthy outside the Lil' Super convenience store on Mississippi 63 in July 2005.

David Lawson said Antonio Johnson indicated he was trying to get some dope from Worthy when Coleman walked up and shot Worthy in the head.

Lawson said Worthy was in the driver's seat of his car, having just filled his car up and was on his way out when Johnson flagged him back around the store.

More than 20 people were around the store, but only Johnson and another man indicated that they'd seen anything.

The other witness, Lawson said, was unable to pick Coleman as the shooter in a photo lineup of potential suspects shortly after the killing.

Coleman is charged with murder in Worthy's killing. He's also slated to be tried at a later date in another murder, this one during an apparent botched burglary in Moss Point that resulted in the shooting death of Yvette Dott in October 2006.

In opening arguments earlier Wednesday, defense attorney George Shaddock said that Johnson, the state's only eyewitness, had a lengthy wrap sheet and, in fact, is in jail on a drug charge.

At the time of Worthy's murder, Shaddock said, Johnson knew he'd been captured on video surveillance footage from the store.

Johnson, Shaddock said, also knew he was the one who'd flagged Worthy down about possibly purchasing some marijuana and was the person who was talking to him when the shooting occurred.

Testimony will resume today before Circuit Judge Dale Harkey.
