Since boyhood, Dr. James Askew has admired Star Trek's Capt. James T. Kirk and his motto, "To boldly go where no man has gone before."
That's what the Saucier veterinarian prefers to do himself. Oh sure, Askew loves cats and dogs, the usual pets, but he relishes the challenges of saving exotics and endangered animals.
So from across the Mississippi Coast come worried pet owners with their iguanas, parrots, monkeys, frogs, fish - you name it. Also come animal rescuers with injured turtles, pelicans, snakes... the list goes on.
Askew, who with Dr. Ann DelBorgo-Ladner runs Saucier Veterinary Hospital, has removed oral tumors from sharks, sutured cut dolphins, pulled arrows out of alligators and used screws on gopher tortoise shells.
The 57-year-old, who grew up in Gulfport, describes himself as a small-animal practitioner with a speciality in exotics.
"My curiosity for all animals and amphibians never went away and I realized that could put me on the cutting edge, take me 'where no man has gone before.'"
